Nepal, UAE renew Associate El Clásico with Asia Cup place on the line

KATHMANDU: Nepal and the United Arab Emirates will renew one of Associate cricket’s fiercest rivalries when they meet in the ACC Men's Premier Cup final at Bayuemas Cricket Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

The 50-over final begins at 9:30am local time and 7:15am Nepal time. Beyond the trophy, the winners will secure the tournament's only qualification place for the 2027 Asia Cup.

Often described as the "Associate El Clásico", matches between Nepal and the UAE have regularly carried major consequences. Saturday's contest is another winner-takes-all encounter between two sides separated by little in their recent history.

How Nepal reached the final

Nepal opened their campaign by dismissing Bahrain for 87 and completing a seven-wicket win. Sandeep Lamichhane took 5/14, while Arjun Kumal anchored the chase with an unbeaten 36.

Karan KC then claimed 4/23 against Malaysia, who were bowled out for 103. Kumal made an unbeaten 45 as Nepal won by six wickets.

Nepal secured their semi-final place with a five-wicket victory over Saudi Arabia. Lamichhane took 3/19 before Gulsan Jha's unbeaten 44 helped Nepal chase 191 with nine overs remaining.

Their unbeaten group run ended against Hong Kong, who posted 261/7 behind Babar Hayat's unbeaten century. Ishan Pandey responded with 90, but Nepal were dismissed for 246 and lost by 15 runs.

That defeat exposed Nepal's batting vulnerabilities, and they were placed under even greater pressure by Oman in the semi-final. Nepal slipped to 36/4 before Dipendra Singh Airee and Basir Ahamad rescued the innings with a 93-run fifth-wicket partnership.

Airee made 51 from 76 balls and Basir scored 47 from 88, lifting Nepal to 147 in 45.4 overs.

The total appeared below par, but Nepal produced their best bowling performance of the competition. Lamichhane took 3/9, Airee returned 3/11, and Rohit Paudel and Lalit Rajbanshi claimed two wickets each as Oman collapsed to 60.

All 10 wickets fell to spin as Nepal completed an extraordinary 87-run defence.

How UAE reached the final

UAE enter the final as the tournament's only unbeaten team.

They began with a 92-run win over Qatar after scoring 263/9, followed by a 66-run DLS victory against Kuwait after posting 286/8.

UAE then bowled Singapore out for 172 and chased the target in 24.3 overs for a seven-wicket win. Their fourth group victory came against Oman, with Aayan Afzal Khan taking 5/34 as UAE successfully defended 192 to win by 49 runs.

Their most dominant performance arrived in the semi-final against Hong Kong at the UKM-YSD Cricket Oval.

Left-arm spinner Haider Ali claimed 6/14 from 10 overs, including three maidens, while Adeeb Usmani took 2/12. Hong Kong were dismissed for only 70 in 30.1 overs.

Tanish Suri struck 27 from 25 balls as UAE raced to 71/3 in 11.1 overs, winning by seven wickets with 233 deliveries remaining.

Players in form

Lamichhane is Nepal’s leading performer with the ball and the tournament’s highest wicket-taker heading into the final. The Nepal captain has collected 16 wickets from five matches, including a five-wicket haul against Bahrain and three-wicket returns against Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Ishan is Nepal’s leading run-scorer with 152 runs. His 90 against Hong Kong remains Nepal’s highest individual score in the tournament, although he managed only one in the semi-final.

Airee will also be central to Nepal's plans after producing the decisive all-round performance against Oman. Basir’s composed 47 in his first appearance of the competition should make him difficult to leave out of the final XI.

For UAE, Adeeb Usmani leads their scoring with 182 runs from five innings, while Tanish Suri has made 146 runs at a strike rate above 100.

Haider’s six-wicket semi-final haul has taken him to 10 wickets, level with Aayan Afzal Khan. Aayan has been influential with both bat and ball, most notably scoring 37 and taking five wickets against Oman.

Final head-to-head

Nepal and UAE have previously met in three senior men's 50-over tournament finals, with each side winning once and the other match ending in a tie.

UAE won the 2002 ACC Trophy final in Singapore by six wickets. Nepal scored 184 before UAE reached 185/4 in 38.3 overs, led by Khurram Khan’s unbeaten 60.

Ten years later, the teams could not be separated in the 2012 ACC Trophy Elite final in Sharjah. UAE made 241/6 and Nepal finished on 241/9, resulting in a tied match and a shared title.

Nepal claimed the most recent 50-over final between the teams in the 2023 ACC Men’s Premier Cup. UAE were dismissed for 117 before Gulsan’s unbeaten 67 guided Nepal to a seven-wicket victory and their first Asia Cup qualification.

UAE did gain some revenge later in 2023, beating Nepal by four wickets in the final of the Nepal T20I Tri-Series.

Overall head-to-head

The teams have faced each other in 32 recognised internationals: 19 ODIs and 13 T20Is.

Nepal lead the ODI record 11-8 and the T20I record 7-6, giving them an overall advantage of 18 victories to UAE's 14.

Nepal have also won their two most recent ODIs against UAE, both played in Kirtipur earlier in 2026. They won the first by 37 runs and the second by six runs under the DLS method.

Conditions and key battle

The Bayuemas surface used for Nepal’s semi-final offered substantial assistance to slower bowlers. Nepal’s four spinners shared all 10 Oman wickets, while Oman’s slow bowlers also caused problems during Nepal’s innings.

UAE's spinners were equally dominant at the other semi-final venue, taking nine of Hong Kong’s 10 wickets. Haider, Aayan and Usmani conceded only 32 runs from their combined 24 overs.

If the final pitch behaves similarly, the contest could be decided by which batting order handles spin more effectively.

Nepal possess variety through Lamichhane’s leg-spin, Lalit’s left-arm orthodox bowling, Airee’s off-spin and Paudel’s part-time option. UAE can counter with two in-form left-arm spinners in Haider and Aayan, supported by Usmani.

Nepal's bowling has repeatedly covered for an inconsistent batting order, but relying on another recovery from early wickets would be dangerous against an unbeaten UAE side. A stable top-order partnership and another substantial contribution from Airee, Ishan or Basir could be essential.

For UAE, the challenge will be preventing Lamichhane from controlling the middle overs and forcing Nepal to turn to their seamers on a surface that has rewarded spin.

Two familiar rivals, one trophy and one Asia Cup place: Associate cricket's El Clásico has rarely carried more at stake.
