Sompal Kami: We're going to India next year!

Senior pacer Sompal Kami couldn't hide his emotions after Nepal secured qualification for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Speaking to Andrew Leonard after the win over Oman, Kami called it a proud moment for Nepal cricket.

“It feels amazing because the World Cup is not a small thing for me," Sompal said. "If we play in the World Cup, it means we are growing as a cricket country.”

He admitted that the team had faith in their qualification long before they arrived in Oman. "It is a big achievement for all of us. The way we played, we were confident that we would qualify. I'm feeling emotional now that we’ve done it," he said.

Sompal also shared that he and Gulshan Jha had often talked about qualifying before the tournament even began. "Before we came to Oman, Gulshan and I used to say we’re already in the World Cup. We are very grateful… and we're going to India!"

Talking about the opportunity to play in India — one of the co-hosts for the 2026 edition — Sompal said the team is excited. "We love to play in India. Everyone knows it's near Nepal. Everyone knows how passionate the fans are there," he said. “The results won't matter as much as the performance — that's what will count."

Reflecting on his own journey, Kami said he has matured personally, but continues to learn as a cricketer. He credited the former senior players for his development. "I learned from Paras dai, Gyanendra dai, and Shakti dai. Because of them, I am here now. I'm blessed and grateful."

Nepal's qualification to the T20 World Cup marks another major milestone in the country’s cricketing journey, and players like Sompal — who have been part of the rise — continue to inspire the next generation.
