Kathmandu – Veteran cricketer Sharad Vesawkar has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned over two decades. The 36-year-old, who made his debut for Nepal in 2004, was one of the key figures in Nepal's rise through the ranks of international cricket.
Vesawkar's journey began as a promising youngster representing Nepal Under-19s at the 2004 ICC U-19 World Cup, where he played alongside future national stars like Paras Khadka and Shakti Gauchan. Known for his composure under pressure and his ability to anchor innings, Vesawkar became a dependable middle-order batter and occasional off-spinner for the national team.
A career of firsts and milestones
Vesawkar made his List A debut against U.A.E. at Rangiora on January 13, 2014, and went on to feature in 39 List A and 4 ODI matches, scoring over 1,000 runs in the format. His ODI debut came against the Netherlands at Amstelveen on August 1, 2018, following Nepal’s historic ODI status achievement.
In the shorter formats, he represented Nepal in 20 T20 Internationals, amassing 325 runs with a strike rate of 99.08. Vesawkar was also part of Nepal’s memorable 2014 ICC T20 World Cup campaign in Bangladesh, where he played a vital role in Nepal’s wins over Hong Kong and Afghanistan.
Consistency and calmness
Across formats, Vesawkar played a total of 43 domestic T20s and 5 First-Class matches, often remembered for his ability to stabilize innings and guide younger teammates. His career-best score of 89 came in both List A and First-Class formats, reflecting his steady contributions over the years.
Beyond batting, Vesawkar also chipped in with useful off-spin, picking 10 wickets in List A and 2 wickets in ODIs, with best figures of 4/28.
Farewell at Hong Kong Sixes
Vesawkar’s final appearance for Nepal came during the Hong Kong Sixes Tournament 2025, fittingly concluding his career in a format that celebrates flair and experience. The tournament also marked a symbolic farewell for one of Nepal’s most respected cricketing figures.
